Last year, 2025, I subscribed via Facebook to the Introduction Day Baan Commissaris, held at the race track TT Assen. A day where future trainee’s had an entertaining day about what it would mean to become and be a (Pit) Steward, or in dutch a Baco (Baan Commissaris).
After that day I registered myself for several days during the season. From March to November there are race days, mostly motorbikes, but also racing cars and some special events.
My initial focus was to be next to the track which means you have a post or corner and whatever happens in your section, you need to deal with that. That could be waving a flag or activating the Digi(tal)Flag, the screens next to the track. All to inform racers about situation on the track.
It happens frequently that racer stops because of engine problems, or they crash. Rule one is Safety. Safety of yourself and team members is key, Safety of the driver is the next action. Make sure you get the driver out asap, with the bike as that is a risk for the other drivers. The longer they, and you are on the track, the higher the risk.
